FLAT TIRES "PAYIN' DUES AGAIN" CD REMASTERED AND SOUNDING BETTER THAN EVER!! North Carolina's favorite hellbillies are back...again. Guitarist Bryon Smallwood chops away with confidence and adds a heavy, yet controlled sound to the Flat Tire's sound. He is a great addition to the band. Payin' Dues...Again continues it's nasty habits, this time it's in the bedroom where break-up sex never sounded so good...or dirty when Scream bleeds through the speakers. The disc rocks on with my favorite ditty, Bourbon Whisky. Here drummer Phil Keller and bassist Scott Cline drive this groove-laden rapture as Harrison explains the positive numbing affects of whiskey. It's a good ol' Flat Tires, goddamned good time. The Flat Tires, who now think of Charlotte as their hometown, are the region's ONLY hellbilly band worth picking your ass up off the sofa and getting out to see them live. Talk about a good time; moshing, flying beer and a shower of empty cans being tossed at the band makes their live show a visual overload and physical beating, even if you stand in the back and don't throw one can. Harrison has the way of sucking the life out of you. If Satan were to front a band, it would be this one......wait a minute. Back to the disc, more honky TANK ensues with Let the Devil Out and On the Loose, two more hardcore classics. The infamous Hypocrite pounds out next, as a big fuck you to all of those who have crossed the Tires. Hypocrite is the Holy Grail of this album. THE ANTARES "START YOUR ENGINES WITH THE ANTARES" CD ZKR044 Italian rock and roll can be hit-or-miss. There are a lot of toilets posing as recording studios (not a problem in itself - except when they're public) and a worryingly high proportion of bands seem to be into metal of the heavy or death variety. The good news is that The Antares don't seem to hang out around the urinals or to like . The Antares play flat-out guitar music that's as much rock as it is punk. That might need explanation. You know how vomit always contains carrots, no matter what you've eaten? Music from the greased back, stripped down spectrum of late '50s rock is The Antares' version of carrots. Hopefully, the vomit reference hasn't put anyone off their lunch because The Antares are very palatable Rock Action. "Start Your Engines..." is just 10 songs in 30 minutes but what a rockin' half-hour it is. The Antares are a trio who kick the shit out of their songs with barely controlled abandon. There's nowhere to hide in a three-piece band and none of them need to. The guitar is fat-sounding and right up-front, the singer blurts it out with no affectations and the drummer nails the beat with more than a little swing, especially on "So What (Bout Our Rock n Roll)." Fans of tear-me-a-new-arsehole guitar will like what they hear. There are more arpeggios than a chord repair shop but they're reeled off like a six-string machine gun rather than a Steve Vai There are no surprises here but it'd be a shock if you could point your finger at something in the rock and roll sewer line that is. Opener "Seek You Down In Hell" is a scene-setter. Its deceptively-buried drum pattern intro slides into a full-on ragged assault that batters the ears in the best way. From then on in, the rock doesn't drop with "16 Was Too Much", "Hard Cock Blues" and the showy but solid instro "Start Your Engines" all stand-outs. There were no metronomes used on this record. I know because the CD slick tells me so. I can't tell you how relieved I am to hear that. That's cool. If you're going to be a cock rocker, wear the badge on your sleeve.

HOLLEY 750 "DEATH MACHINE" CD ZKR081 Sick to death of tame bands and slow music, Holley 750 are here to punch you in the face then kick you when you're down.. super fast trucker punk. They're fast, pissed and looking for something to do. Out of the ashes of no local bands (well none that you would remember) comes Holley 750; named after a big carburetor that pumps more gas in half a block then your Honda does all day. Songs about Roller Derby babes, Honky Tonks and smokin' cigs. Includes covers by Bo Diddley (You Can't Judge a Book by it's Cover) and a great verion of "Strychnine". Ya can't go wrong with this proven classic!

PUNK AS A DOORNAIL "FLOGGING THE PUNK HORSE" CD ZKR065 P.A.A.D. is an incredible, two-piece joke band from Orange County that performs goofy, stupid, brilliant, crass, punk as hell anthems like "Bloody Gumballs" and "Dead As A Sad Snail". The guitarist supposedly (fer sher does!!-pic. of "skatar" on cd)* plays a guitar converted from an old skateboard, which goes beyond funny and into the realm of honestly awesome. Most 13 year olds in bands write more mature lyrics than these guys, but there's nothing more enduring than aging rockers singing about giving mothers a break on Mother's Day by not raping or punching them in the face. I'm in love with this timeless folly.

WORLD WAR IX "PORTRAIT OF SOBRIETY" CD ZKR076 World War IX began as an idea looking for a home in 2002. After different drummers and bassists, the current lineup was locked in after about a year. A 7-song demo was cut in 2003; followed by the acclaimed LP, Panic Attack (2004). WWIX has been blowing minds in their live shows since the band's inception and first show in August of '02. The band has caught the attention of such punk rock icons as Maximum Rock & Roll's Mykel Board, who called the band "my favorite NYC band", and New York Waste editor Glenn Wernig, who, when not being blown away by the band's live stage antics takes the time to comment, "this is the best live show I've seen in years... WEREVILSDARE “FULL MOON FURY” CD ZKR071 Imagine some black metal guitarist moonlighting in a lycanthrope-fixated garage rock band and you've got this bizarrely named Pennsylvania quintet. With buzzsaw guitar grunge that sounds like it was recorded in an abandoned refrigerator, butter tub drumming and vocals like Lemmy on a rockabilly bender, Full Moon Fury is all splatter, no flatter. Ya gotcher horror flick obsession (The Dead Zone, Return of the Living Dead, Scream Queens), yer general horror aesthetic (Sometimes They Come Back, Forgotten & Dead, Satanik a Go-Go) and, natch, yer werewolf envy (Cycle of the Wolf, American Werewolf, the title track). My personal pick to click (the remote) is Race With the Devil, which builds up such maniacal dragstrip mayhem I actually believe the band has been in the titular contest. An unholy hybrid of the Misfits, the Cramps, the Fuzztones and Guitar Wolf, Werevilsdare does gonzo macabrock right.

BILLY JOE WINGHEAD “DARK RIDE” CD ZKR061 A fresh load of cheap thrills from bible-belt blasphemers Billy Joe Winghead, "Dark Ride" is a lurching, disjointed collection of earaches lovingly crafted for those who love noise and hate Jesus, cops and red lights. Haunting theremin work soars over moody guitars, Then it all dives straight back to the sewer with tawdry lyrics over churning grunt-rock. Put two dead cats in identical pillowcases, then run over repeatedly with your car. Leave in your basement for a month. Exhume. If you look in the first pillowcase, you will find two dead cats. In the second one, you will find a copy of "Dark Ride". Don't ask us how- IT'S MAGIC!! The only band these guys sound like for even a minute is NYC’s ALICE DONUT. Anyone remember them? KILEGO VERT "JOURNEY TO THE DEEPEST PART OF THE OCEAN" CD ZKR043 KV is certainly the result of suburbia infused fate. Ty (guitar/keys&laptop/vox) and Kev (drums&percussion) were neighbors for quite some time before a simple back porch conversation over a cigarette in the summer of 2004, sparked the creative combination that makes up two-thirds of the current lineup. Well, what about the other third? As material began to become organized and songs came to be written, bass players seemed to roll in and out with the breeze. The time was now fall of 2006 and the project that would become KV still had not gotten its final member. It just so happened that a guitarist would change all of this. Ty and Brian (Bass&Noizes) were going to a local community college now and had been friends since middle school at this point. They had been pursuing their musical careers separately until Brian picked up a Bass that was left in Ty’s basement and an impromptu jam-session became the catalyst for what is now the trio. The three quickly began to wor k on material for their main life-line of live shows which consist of mind expanding originals, improvisational experimentation, and amazing covers from bands such as Pink Floyd, Radiohead, the Grateful Dead and Umphrey’s McGee. After gaining a reputation in the counterculture of Central Pennsylvania for their jaw dropping performances and unpredictable live sets, the band started to be recognized by musical outlets of the area such as The Pennsylvania Musician magazine and local promotion companies such as The Doctor’s Office (KV was nominated for “Best New Artist in the 717” in their 2007 music awards). The band has just released their debut studio album entitled “Journey to the Deepest Part of the Ocean” (Zodiac Records ©2008) which is a forty minute long dive to the bottom and back. Inspired by the great progressive-rock compositions of the past few decades, the 3 track epic indefinitely features the band’s musical savvy and their contrasting free spirit - they are curre n tly wo rking on a half live, half studio album to capture their love for the live show which will be released sometime in 2009. KV are only headed upwards right now – as the three continue to grow each time they pick up their instruments together, their music has only grown with it. Expect to see anything from these guys –from psychedelic freak-outs to computer-like math rock and from tightly knit original pieces to intelligent on-the-spot jams and covers, the sounds of KV will have you calling yourself a “kilegan” in no time.

Dangerous Dave, bass extraordinaire of The Queers, is leading this triplet of goomba’s and making them play these stupid songs. Well probably not, but this new Italian band reminds me of a more nihlistic version of that band. The Stitches took this brand of swaggering fuck all punk and made it a house hold name in the underground in the late 90..s. Well the Idol Lips are back to take over the throne with their own spite filled, piss n vinegar punk. Rich Bitch, Drinkin About You and Kick Your Ass pretty much exemplify what the Idol Lips are all about. BRAINERD “ANIMAL MOTHER” CD ZKR037 This band/album is the result of LONG-TERM DRUG ABUSE, and a GOOD CULT GONE BAD. You see, these boys who ACTUALLY MET IN CHURCH CHOIR, are none other than THE FUCKER FAMILY MOUNTAIN CULT!!! Imagine if you will if the FOO FIGHTERS sounded more like the MELVINS being fronted by JEFF CLAYTON of ANTISEEN and sang songs about subjects like ED GEIN, JESUS, MULTIPLE SUICIDES, ONE-LEGGED-BARTENDER-HOOKERS, FIVE-LEGGED DOGS, and SPIRITUAL CONSCIOUSNESS. Heavy as fuck guitars, solid backbeat, and some nice production, sometimes reminiscient of early HELMET records. It is laced with both lilting melodies and ear crushing rhythms. THE LASH OUTS SELF-TITLED CD ZKR029 These guys combine the CLASSIC PUNK SOUND with with a 50’s ROCKABILLY type o’ sound. Sorta. Part SEX PISTOLS, part GENE VINCENT, they make great use of handclaps and piano? Dream Catcher reminds me of THE BOYS?, maybe with some grease in their hair? All-around good-time stuff here! NEW. DIFFERENT. EXCITING. WHERE ELSE YA GONNA FIND THAT? ZODIAC DOES NASTIES WHILE LISTENING TO THIS! THE LASH OUTS s/t Great debut from this Dallas band! The Lash Outs combine late 70s punk, traditional rockabilly, power pop & new wave into a really fresh & unique sound of their own. “The Kids Don’t Wanna Dance & “Pain In The Ass” are my favorites here, but the surf influenced instro “Chupacabra” & “Don’t Wanna Be With You” are top notch as well. There’s even a really cool tongue in cheek ballad of sorts in “My Life (Or Lack Thereof)” that holds up to repeated listening, which is no small achievement to these ears! Imagine a hybrid of the Guitar Gangsters, Buddy Holly, the Gears, the Beat & the Controllers with a healthy dose of humor & you’ll have an idea what the Lash Outs are up to.

LUXURY PUSHERS “WELCOME TO THE PARTY, TRAITOR” CD ZKR008 Cocky street-rock, unlike anything else goin' on, in the mid-west. Luxury Pushers got way more in common with the harder-dged punk'n'roll from the Coasts, like say, Electric Frankenstein, or Scott "Deluxe" Drake's latest solo album on Rank Outsider Records, than they do with anything happenin' in their home state, the birth-place of the Pagans, and the Deadboys. Dayton, Ohio's resident glamour-punk, Jamie Holiday, has been corrupting the youth of Dayton since the late-80's in bands like Haunting Souls, and Mystery Addicts. He's gotta be in his forties by now, but he could easily pass for a twenty something, tattooed, emo-kid. While I can see how the "Loud, Fast Rules" punk-rock crowd's already embracing these guys, I suspect they'll also have alot of cross-over appeal with the sleaze-rock set. A heavy punk group for fans of gutter-glam like Vains Of Jenna, Lethal Fixx , Inno cent Rosie, Dirty Penny, and Crash-Diet. This is a great sounding CD that packs a punch. Holiday and co. are putting the punk back into glamour punk. Luxury Pushers are comprised of several songwriters, but it definitely seems like I can appreciate Holiday's compositions like, "Just In It For The Fucking", and "Just Like Faye Dunaway", the most. I think these cats are goin' places, watch for 'em! Holiday has all the right stuff for rock stardom. Had Gilbey Clarke and Tommy Lee chosen him to front that TV rockgroup, instead of that Lucas Rossi Hot-Topic kid, maybe that band really could have gone super-nova. Good stuff. I fully expect these guys to blow-up big, on the strength of this audacious debut. More power to 'em!
